Armor

Modumetal is currently improving the material performance and manufacturing cost-effectiveness in military ballistic armor.

Three qualification requirements exist in the military specification for "Rolled Homogenous Armor" (RHA), the industry baseline for vehicle armor. These are hardness, impact absorption and ballistic protection. Modumetal currently exceeds the specified performance requirements for armor in all of these qualification requirements.

Development is underway to translate Modumetal's performance into a superior ballistic protection material which meets the performance of RHA in ballistic performance at half the weight. The photos below show the qualitative performance of Modumetal and RHA in side-by-side ballistics impact trials carried out at Modumetal's facility.

Rolled Homogenous Armor (left) and Modumetal Armor (right) after impact of .270 caliber, ballistic-tipped bullet at approx. 2800 fps. Note that the bulled passed cleanly through the RHA, but was stopped cold by the Modumetal panel.
